Although pediatric cataract is rare, it remains one of the leading causes of blindness in children. The worldwide prevalence varies between 2.2 and 13.6 per 10 000 children.1 Clinically, any lens opacification detected among children is defined as pediatric cataract. These cataracts are often associated with systemic and ocular comorbidities.
The management of pediatric cataract can be challenging not only because of the special surgical techniques that are sometimes needed but also because of the special postoperative considerations that can occur, which may be associated with visual acuity and other ophthalmic outcomes. Some special considerations include the timing of surgery, whether to leave the eye aphakic or to implant an intraocular lens, and postoperatively, how to manage posterior capsular opacification,2 glaucoma that develops after surgery, and amblyopia and refractive errors.3,4
