Military-style incident prevention technique coming to public schools
SCCPSS implementing new ways to ensure student safety
THANKS ANDY. NOW TO AN EFFORT TO KEEP CHILDREN SAFE IN THE CLASSROOM ACROSS CHATHAM COUNTY... WJCL 22 NEWS' JAYDA RUSSELL BRINGS US THE LATEST ON CRITICAL INCIDENT MAPPING IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND HOW IT COULD SAVE LIVES CRITICAL INCIDENT MAPPING IS BEING USED THROUGHOUT EACH SCCPS IN THE DISTRICT AFTER OFFICERS AND EMERGENCY RESPONDERS FOUND A NEED TO RENEW EACH SCHOOL'S MAP. WITH VARIOUS RENAMINGS, REMODELINGS AND EVEN FACILITY ADD ONS... SAVANNAH CHATHAM PUBLIC SCHOOL POLICE FOUND A CHALLENGE IN RESPONDING TO SCHOOLS USING OUT OF DATE BLUEPRINTS AS LIEUTENANT JUSTIN PRATT DESCRIBES. WE HAD VERY, DIFFERENT MAPS AMONG ALL OF THE FACILITIES, AND WE HAD VERY TECHNICAL, DETAILED ARCHITECTURAL BLUEPRINTS... WE HAD THINGS LIKE, A HAND HAND- DRAWN FIRE EVACUATION MAP THAT A TEACHER HAD MADE. AND SO NEITHER WAS REALLY BENEFICIAL FOR THE EMERGENCY RESPONDER. (LIEUTENANT JUSTIN PRATT, SCPSP EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR, 0:15) CRITICAL RESPONSE GROUP WORKED WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PROVIDE UPDATED BLUEPRINTS THAT ARE ACCESSIBLE TO EACH ADMINITRATIVE MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE CREWS. THE MAP EVEN DETAILS AREAS THAT ARE JUST OFF THE CAMPUS LIKE MAYBE A CHURCH OR A PARK. IF A SCHOOL NEEDS TO EVACUATE FOR A FIRE OR FOR A THREAT, AND THEY GO TO THE, YOU KNOW, COMMUNITY CHURCH NEXT DOOR THAT IS ON THE MAP AS THEIR EVACUATION SPACE, AND WE CAN BE ABLE TO READILY IDENTIFY, YOU KNOW, WHERE THEY'RE AT. (LIEUTENANT JUSTIN PRATT, SCPSP EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR, 0:12) CRITICAL INCIDENT MAPPING IS ONE OF SEVERAL POLICIES THE DISTRICT HOPES TO ROLL OUT FOR ENSURED STUDENT SAFETY

Savannah Chatham County Public Schools now have an up-to-date safety measure in place for first responders and school officers. Critical Response Group teamed up with Savannah Chatham Public School Police to bring critical incident mapping to the school system. Critical incident mapping is a military-style technique that has every detail of a building listed clearly on a virtual blueprint. With several options to locate a room, responders are able to work efficiently to save students. Various schools across the district have been remodeled, renamed or have new add-ons that may not have been previously listed. Lieutenant Justin Pratt is the emergency management coordinator who says this update helps cut down response times."On the map we have room numbers identified, offices identified, special nuances. If somebody calls across the police or the fire department radio that there's an incident in the hair salon at Savannah High School... responders may not even know that there is a hair salon much less where it's at. But it's on the map. And so, they can immediately reference. That may not have a room number, but it's got a location." Lieutenant Pratt explains. He also assures that Critical Response Group is able to come back and add on to maps should schools see renovations in the future. The map is just one of several safety initiatives the school system has prepared for the school year. Technology to detect vaping and weapons are eventually on the roll out in the near future.
